Washington trades for QBs Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson? Shot by Joe Theismann
Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson are two of the best QBs of their respective generations, with one more thing in common: dissatisfaction with their current situation.
Rodgers, 37, wants to leave Green Bay and has not shown up at camp. Watson, 25, has said since hiring the new front office that he will not return to the Houston Texans despite signing a $ 156 million extension in September of last season.
Could Washington be a landing point?
WFT iconic quarterback Joe Theismann is unmoved – and thinks the WFT should be too.
“I don’t see Washington playing for anyone,” Theismann told the Tiki and Tierney Show (hat-tip 106.7 The Fan) when asked about the idea of a successful trade for one of the QBs. “Deshaun, you just don’t know how it’s going to be. You really don’t know, and I think that would be very, very unlikely.
“And the Aaron Rodgers thing would be completely out of the question because you would mortgage the future.”
WFT head coach Ron Rivera has made it clear that the franchise does not want to pay too much for a QB and that he has confidence in the list passer after last week’s minicamp.
Currently, Veteran Companion Ryan fitzpatrick is considered the starting quarterback of the team. Rivera is yet to hand over the keys to the 38-year-old as Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen could fight for the starting reps.
Keep in mind that WFT signed Fitzpatrick to a one-year contract worth $ 10.5 million after his success in Miami. It’s unclear which version of “Fitzmagic” will appear each week.
Even in his best games for the Dolphins, Fitzpatrick was inconsistent in stretching the pitch and targeting his receivers. So far in the Washington camp, this has not been a problem.
In nine games last season, Fitzpatrick had 2,091 yards and 13 touchdowns on eight interceptions. He also adhered to a 68.5 completion percentage, plus a 4-3 record as a starter.
Watson still faces 22 civil cases of sexual misconduct and assault. On the best day, he’s one of the top five quarterbacks in the sport, meaning the asking price to acquire him would cost a hefty penny.
After that, how many games will he be able to play in 2021? Nine, seven, none?
Rodgers, who has a retirement after the 2021 season, could see Washington as a place he won’t thrive. Sure, the team improved offensively with names like Curtis Samuel and Dymai Brown, but is that enough?
More so, will Rodgers be on a three-year lease or worth whatever it costs to get the mega-deal done?
Theismann thinks Fitzpatrick can do the job. Rivera also at this point. It’s tempting to think Watson or Rodgers could be members of the organization, but for now, playing it safe can keep teams ahead.
A season after winning the NFC East, Rivera can’t risk giving up the bank for a position that may or may not change the outcome of the season.
“I’m very confident that we have Ryan as a quarterback for this particular season,” Theismann said of Fitzpatrick. “He’s still playing, and he’s actually playing at a high level.”
