Singing “The Prayer”, school-aged vocal duo Jonathan and Charlotte from Essex, UK embarked on a journey that is now another chapter in Got Talent folklore.
In 2012, during the first round audition of the series, Charlotte Jaconelli, 16, was elegantly dressed in a striking blazer, while Jonathan Antoine, 17, with long hair, wore a brown Jimi Hendrix T-shirt. and loose jeans. . It’s fair to say they looked like an unlikely opera couple. But that’s the kind of stuff that Got Talent moments are made of.

“Just when you think things couldn’t get worse,” Simon Cowell said as they took the stage, with his distinctively derogatory tone. But boy, was he wrong.
For their only chance in the spotlight, the duo chose to sing “The Prayer”, originally made famous by another opera-pop combination, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. The piece begins with strong lines in unison, Jonathan’s opera tenor sound magically mingling with Charlotte’s more focused pop vocals.
The arrangement gave ample opportunity for the tenor to showcase the incredible tone of his full voice. Sure, there were nerves and a few bloated notes, but it was a time when the magic of combining vocals, and passion, took over.
After a few seconds the crowd was standing. “Oh my God,” Cowell exclaimed. “A pop voice and an opera voice together, it was amazing,” said Judge David Walliams. We also like Jonathan’s class, when asked a very embarrassing question about the musicality of the duo.
Jonathan and Charlotte reached the final that season, where they took over that arrangement. They eventually finished second, but the next day they were awarded a £ 1million recording deal. Their first album Together, was released later that year.
After touring, an ITV documentary and a second album, the duo amicably parted ways as they were offered solo recording contracts. Jonathan’s solo albums Tenore and Believe both topped the charts. His most recent album, Go the distance, was released last year.
