Hyderabad: South Central Railway recorded its highest ever parcel revenue with revenue of Rs 200 crore. The trains loaded a total of 4.78 lakh tonnes of parcels in the current fiscal year.
Officials say this has been achieved through various initiatives introduced by the Ministry of Railways and by ensuring that the supply chain of essentials remains strong. An amount of Rs 73.62 crores was earned on non-leased traffic in which parcels were carried by both regular passenger trains and scheduled parcel trains. In addition, an amount of Rs 20.08 crore was generated from the rental of parcel space in 62 baggage coaches and 5 vans.
Indian Railways has taken vital steps in recent times like allowing advance booking of parcel space, scheduled parcel trains as well as Business Development Units (BDUs). They also introduced special trains like Kisan Rail and Doodh Duronto which helped traders, freight operators and farmers with transporting consignments.
The southern zone launched 473 Kisan Specials carrying 1.57 lakh tons of agricultural products to various parts of the country, generating revenue of Rs 72.67 crores.
Doodh Duronto, an initiative launched by the South Zone during the Covid lockdown, transported milk to the nation’s capital. He helped transport 7.22 crore liters of milk and generated Rs 34.03 crore.
Sanjeev Kishore, managing director of South Central Railway, advised the teams to maintain the same momentum to continue helping especially small and medium shippers move their goods.
