Razorbacks await Saturday’s contest winner
CONWAY, Ark. – The American Legion Arkansas state baseball tournament kicks off today with three games, and the Texarkana Razorbacks await the winner of the Paragould-Russellville game for Saturday’s game at 12:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium on the campus of the ‘University of Central Arkansas.
Bryant and Sheridan open the 10-team event at 10 a.m. today. Reigning State Champion Fort Smith and El Dorado face off at 12:30 p.m., Paragould faces Russellville at 3 p.m. and Cabot and Mountain Home face off at 5:30 p.m.
“One of the things we have to overcome is the number of games (we will play), if we don’t win our first two games,” Texar-kana head coach Matt Riddle said. “Those first two are essential from a pitching perspective. We had eighteen guys on our roster, and we lost four guys – all pitchers – to injuries right after submitting our final roster. fourteen guys, and our pitch isn’t as deep as we’d like. The Razorbacks are 23-9 in the State Tournament. With a win, Texarkana plays at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, but a loss sends the Hogs to the 2:30 p.m. playoff game.
The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. The state champion will move to the Mid-South Regional in Hastings, Neb., Starting Wednesday, August 4.
“Fort Smith and Russellville will be strong teams in the tournament,” said Riddle. “We played Fort Smith in a tournament this summer, and they have some big guys who can swing it. Bryant is still our big rival in the American Legion State tournament, and they will be a good competition as well.”
