Q&A with Skarlett Riot
XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest news from the band? New upcoming projects, concerts or announcements?
Skarlett: So Skarlett Riot just released their brand new album ‘Invicta’ worldwide via Despotz Records! The response has been amazing, we hit over a million streams on Spotify, peaked at number 4 on the Itunes Metal Chart, and peaked at 3rd in the Amazon UK metal charts! We are currently working and planning shows so stay tuned
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Skarlett: More than 10 years now!
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band originally?
Skarlett: I took vocal and acoustic guitar lessons after seeing Avril Lavigne on music channels, I remember thinking “wow, that girl is awesome, I would love to learn to sing and play the guitar”. So I decided to take music to school and enter a local song contest which was judged by Sheridan Smith, and I won, which gave me the confidence to join a band and start SR with Dan and Luke.
XS ROCK: What are your current musical career goals?
Skarlett: Of course we would love to be in the arenas, but being able to make a living being on the road, and being able to make headlines around the world would be a huge achievement.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Write new songs and record or perform for a live audience?
Skarlett: We love both, but for me it’s about playing live, writing new songs and recording them is so rewarding, but being able to deliver them to the fans, hearing them sing the lyrics is definitely what motivates me!
XS ROCK: What are the lyrics of your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Skarlett: All kinds of life experiences including mental health, equality, bullying, love life, the things that I go through on a daily basis and want to express to the world.
XS ROCK: What is the most important thing for you as a musician?
Skarlett: To make sure you stay true to yourself and your fans. We want to make music that we believe in, music that we write with the heart, there is no point in following a trend or a scene if you are not passionate about the music you are playing.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Skarlett: I was proposed, a fan came on stage and asked me to marry him. Flattered: ‘)
XS ROCK: Do your friends and family support your choice to play in a rock band?
Skarlett: Yeah, definitely we couldn’t wish for a more supportive family. They know all the words haha.
XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?
Skarlett: Be patient, it doesn’t happen overnight, we’ve learned a lot from the experience. And make sure you have the right group members, it saves a lot of time in the long run knowing you all want the same
XS ROCK: What are your favorite songs to play live?
Skarlett: Warrior and Break, usually our opening and ending songs, so much energy in them. But we can’t wait to try the new songs from the album live!
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to play? Why?
Skarlett: There are a lot, but Papa Roach, BFMV, Evanescence. They have so much emotion in their music, their lyrics and the delivery of their songs, it gives me the energy and adrenaline to do the same!
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be showing?
Skarlett: I think all bands would say different answers haha, but for me, Bullet For My Valentine, Papa Roach, Skarlett Riot!
XS ROCK: What is your biggest achievement so far?
Skarlett: I would say to get to where we are, we come from such a small town and we didn’t know anyone in the music scene to ask for favors etc, we worked so hard and we wrote from our heart so everything we have accomplished makes us so proud!
XS ROCK: If you weren’t playing in a band, what kind of career do you think you would have?
Skarlett: Haha hmmmm, maybe an artist? I like to draw.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Skarlett: I’m proud to see Metal bands like Parkway Drive, In This Moment, Architects playing in arenas, I think that says a lot about the fact that there is a big call for metal music and that ‘there is a good scene in the UK!
XS ROCK: For those who don’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Skarlett: Hmm maybe our influences, our drummer likes John Meyer, I like pop music like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry. Haha.
XS ROCK: Is there anything you would like to promote or tell your fans?
Skarlett: Thank you so much for supporting us, without you we couldn’t do what we love the most. We owe you all of this!
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to chat with us at XS ROCK!
