Joyce L. Banks, 86, of Chicago Heights, IL, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Franciscan Health Hospital, Olympia Fields, IL following a long illness.
Born July 26, 1934 in Midland, Pennsylvania. Daughter of the late Loma and the late Mary Smith. Joyce was predeceased by her late husband, George K. Banks, her brother Vernon Smith, her nephew Mark Camel and her niece Andrea Davilla.
Joyce was a graduate of the Midland High School Class of 1952 and the Rochester Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked as a nurse at Potters Medical Center in East Liverpool, OH for many years until a knee injury forced her to withdraw from nursing.
Joyce grew up in a family of musicians: her father played the crown, her mother taught piano and played for movies in Midland, Pa., Her brother played the trumpet professionally, and her sister played the clarinet. She also had cousins who professionally played various instruments. Joyce played clarinet and piano and performed in the Midland High School band. She sang in her high school choir and the Mount Olive Baptist Church Choir in Midland. She received a vocal scholarship at Pitt University. Joyce played the piano for the Sheridan AME Church Choir in East Liverpool, OH for many years. She was also a member of the Choir of the Church of the Nazarene in Chicago Heights.
Joyce grew up and was an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Midland, Pennsylvania, until she moved to East Liverpool where she became an active member of Sheridan AME Church. After moving to Richton Park, Illinois, she became an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in Chicago Heights.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Naomi (Smith) Barr, her two sons Jan R. Hastings as well as her partner Anne Montgomery and Daryl L. Hastings as well as his wife Lisa, two granddaughters Erika Spellman and Ashley Hastings, two great – grandchildren Lexa Mosby and Josiah Fountain, niece Melody Minnott and her husband Howard, nephew Vernon Smith Jr. and niece Jacki Sears and daughter Isabella.
Friends can visit Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the Leak Funeral Home in Country Club Hills, IL from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday, June 21, 2021, before the service, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. where family will be present.
Pastor Paula Harris will celebrate Joyce’s life on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
