U.R.Ananthamurthy,
one of the most significant writers of contemporary
India was born in Melige, Karnataka in 1932. He
received his early education in a traditional
Sanskrit school, and later on got his Bachelor’s and
Master’s degrees from the Mysore University.
In 1963 he went to
England on a Commonwealth Fellowship to do his
Doctoral degree at the University of Birmingham. It
was here that he wrote his celebrated and
controversial first novel, Samskara. Samskara was
received with great acclaim when it was published in
1965 and has been translated into many languages. In
1970 it was made into an award-winning film.
Ananthamurthy’s other works include four novels-Bharatipura,
Awasthe, Bhava and Divya-and several volumes of
short stories, poems and essays. Two of his short
stories, Ghatashraddha and Bara, and the novel
Awasthe have also been made into films.
U.R. Ananthamurty’s
many honours and awards include the Masti Award in
literature, the Jnanapith Award and the Padma
Bhushana. The film “Mouni” is based on
Ananthamurthy’s short story.
